During the e-Crime Wales Summit last Wednesday it was announced that e-Crime is costing the UK £27 billion per year.This is the result of 19 people each minute falling victim to an e-Crime in Britain.
These figures account for the number of individuals and businesses each year whose unprotected systems are breached by online hackers and cause damage or destruction to important data. These are astonishing figures and it’s not just small businesses who become victims.
Earlier this year, Sony’s PlayStation 3 was attacked by malicious hackers who accessed their customer account details. This resulted in a staggering 93,000 customer accounts having to be closed down. The company learnt in very negative circumstances that being safe online really is crucial, not only did it lose revenue by having to shut its service for several weeks but sales of Microsoft’s Xbox surged during this period, as customers switched products.
