Group to fight for better broadband

A dedicated group has been set up to get better broadband services for Wales.

The Wales Internet Service Providers Association has been launched in Cardiff specifically to serve the needs of Wales.

In a recent House of Commons debate MPs were told that rural businesses and communities are being isolated and undermined by slow internet and mobile phone coverage.

Some of the urban areas of South Wales still experience a poor internet connection.

The newly-appointed WISPA chairman is former Ofcom head of broadcasting and telecommunications for Wales, Hywel Wiliam.

He said: "I am very honoured but there is a lot of work to do.

I firmly believe that Wales has a bright digital future but we want other providers to join us fast and we also want to sit down with BT at the earliest opportunity. Wales must not get left behind."

A special website and an online survey facility is also being introduced by WISPA, as well as an education campaign promoting the benefits of broadband and Internet connectivity and lobbying on behalf of the telecoms industry.

Spectrum Internet is a member of WISPA.

Claire Brown, Head of Marketing at Spectrum Internet has declared: "The issues with Internet services in Wales need to be addressed locally and so we are pleased to join the association who will consider the problems of both businesses and residential broadband users within the principality and not on as UK wide problem."
